ABD lideri, Orta Doğu konusunda ise İsrailliler ve Filistinlilere barış ve güvenlik içinde birlikte yaşama hakkını tanıyan iki devletli çözümü kuvvetle ve aktif şekilde desteklediklerini belirtti. Ülkemizin elli eyaletinde yaşayan Müslüman toplumlar da dahil olmak üzere Amerikan halkı adına, Amerika ve dünyanın her tarafındaki Müslümanlara en iyi dileklerimi sunuyorum. Ramazanınız kutlu olsun.
Ramazan, İslam inancına göre Kuran’ın, basit bir kelime – oku ile başlayarak Muhammed Peygambere nazil olduğu aydır. Dolayısıyla, Ramazan Müslümanların imanla gelen ışık ve irfanı, insanların bir-birlerine ve Allah’a karşı sorumluluklarını daha derin düşündükleri bir zamandır.
Ramazanı bizim toplumumuz ve ailelerimizde gözlemleyen farklı dinlere mensup birçokları gibi ben de bu ayın ailelerin bir araya geldiği ve birlikte iftar ettikleri mutlu bir zaman olduğunu biliyorum. Bunu da biliyorum ki, Ramazan aynı zamanda yoğun bir ibadet ve tefekkür ayıdır; bu ay zarfında Müslümanlar gün boyu oruç tutar, gece teravih namazı kılar, bir ay süresinde Kuran’ın tamamını okur ve dinler.
Bu dini adetler bize ortak olduğumuz ilkelerle birlikte, İslam’ın adalet, gelişme, hoşgörü ve beşeriyet onurunun güçlenmesinde oynadığı rolü hatırlatır.
Örneğin, oruç tutmak kavramı, benim mensup olduğum Hıristiyan dini de dahil birçok din ve bir sonraki yemeği yemenin bir garantisi olmadığına inanan müminler arasında, insanları Tanrı’ya yaklaştıran bir yol olarak kabul edilir. Müslümanların diğerlerine sağladığı destek de bizim olanak ve refahı her yerde insanlara ulaştırmamız konusundaki sorumluluğumuzu hatırlatır. Şunu unutmamalıyız ki, yaratmak istediğimiz dünya ve gerçekleştirmek istediğimiz değişiklikler kendi yüreğimizde ve kendi toplumumuzda başlamalıdır.
Bu yaz Amerika’nın her tarafında insanlar çocuklara eğitim vererek, hastalara bakarak, zor günler yaşayanlara yardım ellerini uzatarak toplumlarına hizmet etti. Birçok İslam kökenli örgüt de dahil, dini temele dayanan teşkilatlar yaz mevsimi boyunca devam eden çalışmaların ön saflarında yer aldı. Bu zor zamanlarda taşıdığımız sorumluluk ruhunu önümüzdeki aylar ve yıllarda da sürdürmemiz gerekmektedir.
Biz aynı zamanda, Amerika sınırlarının ötesinde, daha barışçıl ve güvenli bir dünya yaratmak alanındaki sorumluluğumuza da sadakatle bağlıyız. Bunun içindir ki, Irak’taki savaşı sona erdirmek konusunda sorumluluğumuzu yerine getiriyoruz. Bunun içindir ki, Afganistan ve Pakistan gibi yerlerde halkı güçlendirirken şiddetten istifade eden aşırıcıları izole ediyoruz. Bunun içindir ki, İsrailliler ve Filistinlilere barış ve güvenlik içinde birlikte yaşama hakkını
tanıyan iki-devlet çözümünü kuvvetle ve aktif şekilde destekliyoruz. Bunun içindir ki, Amerika her zaman, tüm insanların düşündüklerini söylemesi, dinine ibadet etmesi, toplumda tam katılımı ve hukukun üstünlüğüne güvenmesini içeren evrensel hakların savunucusu olacaktır.
Tüm bu çabalar Amerika’nın Müslümanlar ve halkının çoğu Müslüman olan ülkelerle karşılıklı çıkar ve saygı temelinde ilişkiler geliştirmek arzusunun bir parçasıdır. Bu fırsattan faydalanarak, Amerika ile dünya genelinde Müslümanlar arasında yeni bir başlangıca bağlılığımı yeniden vurgulamak istiyorum.
Kahire’deki konuşmamda da söylediğim gibi, bu yeni başlangıç bir-diğerini dinlemek, bir-diğerinden öğrenmek, bir-diğerine saygı göstermek ve ortak bir zemin bulmak için gösterilen sürekli çabaların eseri olmalıdır. Bunun önemli bir kısmını, dinlemenin oluşturduğuna inanıyorum ve bu nedenle son iki ay boyunca dünya genelinde Amerikan elçilikleri sadece Müslüman çoğunluklu ülkelerin hükümetleri değil, doğrudan doğruya halkı ile de temas kurdu. Bunun sonucunda, bize, Amerika’nın insanların arzu ve isteklerine nasıl tercüman olabileceği konusunda dünyanın her tarafından çok çeşitli fikirler iletildi.
Biz dinledik. Ve sizin yaptığınız gibi, hem açıkladığım politika ve güvenlik alanlarında, hem de insanların hayatlarında en fazla farklılık yaratacağını söylediğiniz alanlarda, zamanla değişiklik getirecek somut etkinlikleri hayata geçirmek üzerinde odaklaştık.
Bu istişareler benim Kahire’de gerçekleştirmeye çağırdığım – eğitimde değişim programlarını genişletmek; girişimciliği geliştirmek ve yeni iş alanları yaratmak; okuma-yazma becerisi ve mesleki öğrenimi desteklerken bilim ve teknolojide işbirliğini artırmak konularında- ortaklık etkinliklerini uygulamaya koymamıza yardım ediyor. Biz aynı zamanda İslam Konferansı Örgütü ve İslam Konferansı Örgütüne üye ülkeler ile çocuk felcini yok etmek alanında işbirliği yapmak için çalışırken, hacca hazırlanan birçok Müslüman’ın özellikle kaygılandığını bildiğim H1N1 gibi hepimizi etkileyen sağlık problemlerinin giderilmesi yolunda uluslararası ilgililerle yakın çalışmaları sürdürüyoruz.
Bu çalışmaların hepsi barış ve güvenlik içinde yaşamak; tahsil almak ve onurlu yaşamak; ailemizi, toplumumuzu ve dinimizi sevmek gibi ortak arzularımızın gerçekleştirilmesini hedef almaktadır. Bunlar zaman ve sabırlı çalışma ister. Durumu bir gece içinde değiştiremeyiz ama yapılması gerekenleri hayata geçirmeye içtenlikle azmederek, kendimiz ve çocuklarımız için arzu ettiğimiz hedefe doğru yeni bir yönde ilerleyebiliriz. İşte hep birlikte çıkmamız gereken yolculuk budur.
Bu son derecede önemli diyalogun devam etmesi ve eyleme dönüşmesini beklerken, bugün, Amerika ve dünyanın her tarafında Ramazanı karşılayan Müslümanlara hayırlı bir ay diliyorum. Tanrının selamı üzerinize olsun.

Ramadan Message
Washington, DC

On behalf of the American people – including Muslim communities in all fifty states – I want to extend best wishes to Muslims in America and around the world. Ramadan Kareem.
Ramadan is the month in which Muslims believe the Koran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, beginning with a simple word – iqra. It is therefore a time when Muslims reflect upon the wisdom and guidance that comes with faith, and the responsibility that human beings have to one another, and to God.
Like many people of different faiths who have known Ramadan through our communities and families, I know this to be a festive time – a time when families gather, friends host iftars, and meals are shared. But I also know that Ramadan is a time of intense devotion and reflection – a time when Muslims fast during the day and perform tarawih prayers at night, reciting and listening to the entire Koran over the course of the month.
These rituals remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam’s role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human beings.
For instance, fasting is a concept shared by many faiths – including my own Christian faith – as a way to bring people closer to God, and to those among us who cannot take their next meal for granted. And the support that Muslims provide to others recalls our responsibility to advance opportunity and prosperity for people everywhere. For all of us must remember that the world we want to build – and the changes that we want to make – must begin in our own hearts, and our own communities.
This summer, people across America have served in their communities – educating children, caring for the sick, and extending a hand to those who have fallen on hard times. Faith-based organizations, including many Islamic organizations, have been at the forefront in participating in this summer of service. And in these challenging times, this is a spirit of responsibility that we must sustain in the months and years to come.
Beyond America’s borders, we are also committed to keeping our responsibility to build a world that is more peaceful and secure. That is why we are responsibly ending the war in Iraq. That is why we are isolating violent extremists while empowering the people in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan. That is why we are unyielding in our support for a two-state solution that recognizes the rights of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security. And that is why America will always stand for the universal rights of all people to speak their mind, practice their religion, contribute fully to society and have confidence in the rule of law.
All of these efforts are a part of America’s commitment to engage Muslims and Muslim-majority nations on the basis of mutual interest and mutual respect. And at this time of renewal, I want to reiterate my commitment to a new beginning between America and Muslims around the world.
As I said in Cairo, this new beginning must be borne out in a sustained effort to listen to each other, to learn from each other, to respect one another, and to seek common ground. I believe an important part of this is listening, and in the last two months, American embassies around the world have reached out not just to governments, but directly to people in Muslim-majority countries. From around the world, we have received an outpouring of feedback about how America can be a partner on behalf of peoples’ aspirations.
We have listened. We have heard you. And like you, we are focused on pursuing concrete actions that will make a difference over time – both in terms of the political and security issues that I have discussed, and in the areas that you have told us will make the most difference in peoples’ lives.
These consultations are helping us implement the partnerships that I called for in Cairo – to expand education exchange programs; to foster entrepreneurship and create jobs; and to increase collaboration on science and technology, while supporting literacy and vocational learning. We are also moving forward in partnering with the OIC and OIC member states to eradicate polio, while working closely with the international community to confront common health challenges like H1N1 – which I know is of particular to concern to many Muslims preparing for the upcoming hajj.
All of these efforts are aimed at advancing our common aspirations – to live in peace and security; to get an education and to work with dignity; to love our families, our communities, and our God. It will take time and patient effort. We cannot change things over night, but we can honestly resolve to do what must be done, while setting off in a new direction – toward the destination that we seek for ourselves, and for our children. That is the journey that we must travel together.
I look forward to continuing this critically important dialogue and turning it into action. And today, I want to join with the 1.5 billion Muslims around the world – and your families and friends – in welcoming the beginning of Ramadan, and wishing you a blessed month. May God’s peace be upon you.

Au nom du peuple des États-Unis - y compris les communautés musulmanes des cinquante États de l'Union - j'adresse mes meilleurs voeux aux musulmans d'Amérique et du monde entier. Ramadan karim.
Le ramadan est le mois durant lequel, selon la foi musulmane, le Coran fut révélé au prophète Mahomet, commençant par un seul mot : iqra. C'est donc, pour les musulmans une période de réflexion sur la sagesse et sur les préceptes qui accompagnent la foi, et sur la responsabilité que les êtres humains ont les uns envers les autres ainsi qu'envers Dieu.
Comme beaucoup de gens de confessions diverses qui ont vu le ramadan dans nos communautés et nos familles, je sais qu'il s'agit d'une période festive où les familles se rassemblent et partagent leurs repas. Mais je sais aussi que le ramadan est un temps de dévotion et de réflexion profondes, où les musulmans jeûnent pendant la journée et accomplissent la prière nocturne des Tarawi, récitant et écoutant le Coran entier en l'espace d'un mois.
Ces rites nous rappellent les principes qui nous unissent et le rôle de l'islam en tant que promoteur de la justice, du progrès, de la tolérance et de la dignité de tout être humain.
Ainsi, le jeûne est un précepte commun à maintes confessions, y compris ma propre foi chrétienne, comme moyen de se rapprocher de Dieu et de ceux d'entre nous dont le prochain repas n'est pas assuré. Le soutien que les musulmans apportent à autrui nous rappelle notre obligation de promouvoir le progrès et la prospérité chez tous les peuples. Car nous devons tous nous souvenir que, s'agissant du monde que nous voulons bâtir et des changements que nous voulons apporter, c'est en nos coeurs et en nos collectivités que tout commence.
Cet été, des gens partout en Amérique ont servi leur collectivité, éduquant des enfants, soignant des malades et venant en aide à des gens en difficulté. Les organisations confessionnelles, notamment de nombreuses organisations islamiques, ont participé au premier plan à cet été de service. Et dans ces temps difficiles, c'est là un esprit de responsabilité que nous devons soutenir durant les mois et les années à venir.
Au-delà des frontières des États-Unis, nous avons également la responsabilité de bâtir un monde plus paisible et plus sûr. C'est pourquoi nous mettons fin de manière responsable à la guerre en Irak. C'est pourquoi nous isolons les extrémistes violents tout en affranchissant les peuples de pays tels l'Afghanistan et le Pakistan. C'est pourquoi nous appuyons activement une solution à deux États qui reconnaisse le droit des Israéliens et des Palestiniens de vivre en paix et en sécurité. C'est pourquoi, aussi, l'Amérique défendra toujours les droits universels de l'homme : la liberté d'expression, la liberté religieuse, une pleine contribution à la société et la confiance dans la règle du droit.
Tous ces efforts s'inscrivent dans l'engagement des États-Unis à dialoguer avec les musulmans et avec les États à majorité musulmane sur la base des intérêts communs et du respect mutuel. En cette période de renouveau, je tiens à réaffirmer ma détermination à forger un nouveau départ entre mon pays et les musulmans de par le monde.
Comme je l'ai dit au Caire, ce nouveau départ doit s'accomplir dans le cadre d'un effort soutenu en vue de s'écouter les uns les autres, de nous informer les uns les autres, de nous respecter les uns les autres et de chercher des terrains d'entente. Cela implique, à mon avis, un élément important d'écoute et, depuis deux mois, les ambassades des États-Unis de par le monde engagent le dialogue non seulement avec des gouvernements, mais aussi directement avec la population de pays à majorité musulmane. Et du monde entier, nous recevons en retour d'innombrables messages sur la façon dont les États-Unis peuvent devenir un partenaire en faveur des aspirations des peuples.
Nous avons écouté. Et comme vous, nous focalisons notre énergie sur des actions concrètes débouchant sur des résultats, tant dans les domaines politique et sécuritaire que j'ai évoqués que dans les domaines dont vous nous avez dit qu'ils apporteraient les plus grandes améliorations à la vie des populations.
Ces consultations nous aident à mettre en oeuvre les partenariats que j'ai préconisés au Caire : élargir les programmes d'échanges éducatifs ; favoriser la création d'entreprises et d'emplois ; enfin, augmenter la collaboration dans les domaines scientifique et technique, sans omettre de soutenir les programmes d'alphabétisation et de formation. Nous établissons des partenariats avec l'Organisation de la conférence islamique et avec ses États membres en vue d'éradiquer la polio tout en collaborant étroitement avec la communauté internationale à la solution de problèmes de santé publique tels que le H1N1, dont je sais que beaucoup de musulmans en particulier s'inquiètent à cause des préparatifs du hadj.
Toutes ces initiatives visent à répondre à nos aspirations communes : vivre dans la paix et dans la sécurité ; obtenir une éducation et travailler avec dignité ; aimer notre famille, notre communauté et notre foi. Cela exigera du temps et des efforts patients. Nous ne pouvons tout transformer du jour au lendemain mais nous pouvons prendre honnêtement la résolution de faire ce qu'il faut faire, tout en nous engageant dans une nouvelle direction, vers la destination que nous visons pour nous-mêmes et pour nos enfants. Tel est le chemin qu'ensemble nous devons parcourir.
J'ai hâte, pour ma part, de poursuivre ce dialogue d'importance cruciale et de le traduire en actes. Aujourd'hui donc, je voudrais souhaiter aux musulmans des États-Unis et du monde entier un mois très saint alors qu'ils accueillent le début du ramadan. Que la paix de Dieu soit avec vous.
